Flame Effects for the Artist – South Florida  – Saturday and Sunday, November 6th and 7th, 2021

This class is for all artists, mechanical enthusiasts and all of who wish to incorporate fire aspects into their projects! This is your chance to learn how to meet NFPA standards, hear from others working flame effects where you live and have fun while learning safe practices.

Our hosts will be volunteers from The Love Burn. The event will be located in Lantana in South Florida near West Palm Beach. Closest airports are PBI and FLL.

Class details:

We will begin Saturday morning by teaching basic practices and principles for incorporating fuel-based flame effects into your work. Been thinking of adding Propane Flame Effects to your projects? This is the class for you. Each one of these classes has in the past drawn participants at all levels of experience. This has made for some great questions, unexpected learnings and projects that have been both fun and challenging!

This first day will consist mainly of a classroom session where we will discuss subjects including:

NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) codes including NFPA 58 Liquefied Petroleum Gas Code and NFPA 160 Standard for the Use of Flame Effects Before an Audience.

We will also examine the physical properties of LP gasses and get some hands on time with fittings and parts.  Of course, we closely examine the wonders of LP gas in liquid form and watch it vaporize with the amazing clear propane cylinder.  We will then finish off by taking a look at some typical designs for Flame Effects including accumulators, free burning effects and fuel mortars. We will also look at control systems, pilot lights, hot surface igniters, and… of course, we will deep dive into fire safety and fire extinguishers. We will have plenty of demonstrations and hands-on materials.

The second day will be a shop day where we will put what we have learned into action and create a one of a kind flame effect from the materials we have on hand. The best part of the class is the assembly of the effect so please let us know if you have materials or elements you may like to see incorporated. We will have experienced metal fabricators on hand to help teach and share the welding and plasma cutting!

Leading this weekend will be Dave X, Fire Safety Manager for Burning Man for more than 10 years, and Eric Smith, Director of Education and Code Development for the State of Nevada Board for the Regulation of LP-Gas and co-owner of Poofer Supply.
