Flame Effects for the Artist Workshop – April 25-26, 2020 in Portland, OR
Our friend J. Claire Dean and her friends at The Epicenter have invited us to join them and the Portland Burning Man Community for a full weekend of learning and making fire in the City of Roses (yes, that is the official nickname for Portland, but most locals prefer PDX).
This is a workshop for all artists, mechanical enthusiasts, and anyone who wishes to incorporate fire aspects into their projects! This is your chance to learn how to comply with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards, hear from others working with flame effects where you live, and have fun while learning safe practices.
The workshop will be held at: The Epicenter, 6781 NE Columbia Blvd., Unit 22, Portland, OR 97218

The two day workshop will be presenting NFPA codes, parts and pieces, best practices, and hands on work for those incorporating fuel based flame effects into your projects.
We welcome both the novice and the well versed. If you are an artist considering the incorporation of a small flame element, as well as the more experienced fire artist wanting to take their work to the next level this is the workshop for you. This course has been created to draw participants with all levels of experience. This class is great for the beginning/novice fire artist and always has something new for the “expert”. This model has facilitated some great projects that are both fun and challenging.
The first day will consist of a classroom session where we will discuss subjects including:
NFPA guidelines including NFPA 58 (Liquefied Petroleum Gas Code), NFPA 160 (Standard for the Use of Flame Effects Before an Audience), as well as other codes.
We will also examine the physical properties of LP gasses and get some hands on time with fittings and parts. Of course, we closely examine the wonders of LP gas with the amazing clear propane cylinder. We will finish off by taking a look at some typical designs for Flame Effects including accumulators, free burning effects, fuel mortars, pilot lights, hot surface igniters and much more. We will have plenty of demonstrations and hands-on materials.
The second day will be spent in the shop, putting what we have learned into action to create a one of a kind flame effect from the materials on hand. This is the best part of the class, so please let us know if you have materials or elements you may like to see incorporated.
Leading this weekend will be Dave X, Fire Safety Manager for Burning Man for more than 10 years, and Eric Smith, Director of Education and Code Development for the State of Nevada Board for the Regulation of LP Gas and owner of Poofer Supply.
Saturday night we'll enjoy a meet and greet with local fire enthusiasts from the Portland area, details to be announced at the workshop.
The cost of this 2-Day class will be $175
Both days’ classes will be from 10am – 5pm.
Printed materials and a tasty lunch of whatever cheap processed meats we can fit on the grill will be provided.
Come and join us for the weekend to hang out with other fire artists and have a blast, no pun intended
