Flame Effects for the Artist workshop and event – March 2-3, 2019 in Detroit, MI

Our friends at the amazing 333 Midland in Highland Park have invited us to their gallery and studios to work with them for a full weekend of learning and making fire.

This is a workshop for all artists,  mechanical enthusiasts, and anyone who wishes to incorporate fire aspects into their projects!  This is your chance to learn how to comply with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards, hear from others working with flame effects where you live, and have fun while learning safe practices.

333 Midland is an industrial studio space with an annex art space.  It was formerly the Lewis Stamping Plant, and now offers extensive space to artists and sculptors who wish to create large scale works.

The workshop will be held at:  333 Midland, Highland Park, MI 48203

Workshop Details:

The two day workshop will be presenting NFPA codes,  parts and pieces, best practices, and hands on work for those incorporating fuel based flame effects into your projects.

We welcome both the novice and the well versed. If  you are an artist considering the incorporation of a small flame element, as well as the more experienced fire artist wanting to take their work to the next level this is the workshop for you. This course has been created to draw participants with all levels of experience. This class is great for the beginning/novice fire artist and always has something new for the “expert”. This model has facilitated some great questions and projects, that are both fun and challenging.

The first day will consist of a classroom session in the annex. We will discuss subjects including:

NFPA guidelines including NFPA 58 (Liquefied Petroleum Gas Code), NFPA 160 (Standard for the Use of Flame Effects Before an Audiance), as well as other codes.

We will also examine the physical properties of LP gasses and get some hands on time with fittings and parts.  Of course, we closely examine the wonders of LP gas with the amazing clear propane cylinder. We will finish off by taking a look at some typical designs for Flame Effects including accumulators, free burning effects, fuel mortars, pilot lights, hot surface igniters and much more. We will have plenty of demonstrations and hands-on materials.

The second day will be spent in the shop, putting what we have learned into action to create a one of a kind flame effect from the materials on hand. This is the best part of class, so please let us know if you have materials or elements you may like to see incorporated.

Leading this weekend will be Dave X, Fire Safety Manager for Burning Man for more than 10 years, and Eric Smith, Director of Education and Code Development for the State of Nevada Board for the Regulation of LP Gas and owner of Poofer Supply.

Saturday night we'll enjoy a meet and greet with local fire enthusiasts from the Detroit and Ann Arbor area. We welcome Syncitium and a few other local artists in displaying some past works of fire over some drinks and Horsy durves. This will not be a late night as we have to get back to class Sunday morning.
